Who am I?
My name is György Chityil, you can find me on Linkedin and Facebook. As you can tell by my name I am not from an Anglo-Saxon country and English is not my mother tongue, still I was always fascinated by this language and also completed my university studies in the United States, hence I achieved an excellent grasp of the language.
My story
I operate a product review site and employ several online writers paid by word count. While I strive to provide the best quality product evaluations to my readers before they make a purchase, my writers try to maximize profits by churning out as many words as possible. As they rush, they often generate weak sentences and proofreading these made me tired and frustrated and I started to look for automated solutions that could perform checks instead of me. First I tried spellcheckers and while these provided proper checks for typos, they end there. I also found some online services that claim to perform grammatical and syntactical checks but most are overpriced and give lots of false positives.
When I realized nothing or noone can help me unless I shell out big bucks I took the plunge and started automating proofreading. First I developed simple statistical text analysis which unearthed repetitive parts of an essay, so I could immediately reject submissions that had any word density above 5% both for single and double words and phrases. The quality of articles instantanously improved but I still noticed grammatical problems here and there, so I went deeper and looked for more advanced technologies. I stumbled upon Natural Language Processing (NLP) algorithms, cutting edge solutions for analyzing a text for parts of speech and light bulbs immediately lit up in my head as with these I could check for deep syntactical issues from missing parts of speech, such as nouns or verbs to subject and verb agreement. Seeing how Proofread Bot improved my writer's output I realized it could provide immense value for others. Putting such a service online free without limits would quickly get abused, so I allow 1 free submission per day per IP address, and if someone wants more I charge a small fee of 1 cent a check. This could not get any cheaper.
