These readability tests are used extensively in the field of education. The result translates to a U.S. grade level, making it easier for teachers, parents, librarians, and others to judge the readability level of various books and texts.
Interpreting your resultTexts for a wide audience generally need an index less than 12. Texts requiring near-universal understanding generally need an index less than 8.
As a rough guide, US grade level 1 corresponds to ages 6 to 8. Reading level grade 8 corresponds to the typical reading level of a 14 year-old US child. Grade 12, the highest US secondary school grade before college, corresponds to the reading level of a 17 year-old.
